C-2
C-2
The C-X program, now C-2, is meant to procure a cargo military aircraft to replace the C-1 fleet in service with Japanese Defense Force (JDF). The entry into service of the first C-X cargo aircraft was scheduled for 2011 but finally was fielded in late March 2017. Between 20 and 30 aircraft could be produced under the C-X program. As of 2016, Japan expects to procure up to 44 aircraft under the Kawasaki C-2 aircraft program. In August 2003, the Japan Defense Agency (JDA) selected General Electric's CF6-80C2 turbofan to power the C-X aircraft. The first engine is scheduled for delivery in 2006 and the procurement contract of the CF6 engines is valued at approximately $1 billion for a 30-year. The same engine was already selected by Japan to power the 767 AWACS, KC-767 tanker and Boeing 747 VIP transport aircraft.
