AGM-158D JASSM-XR
The AGM-158D JASSM-XR (Extreme Range) is a new variant of the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile officially ordered by the US Air Force in June 2023. The AGM-158D variant may have a maximum range between 1,600-to-1,900 kilometers to engage ground targets from safer ranges. The oversized D variant features more fuel load, a new wing design, GPS-receiver with M-Code capabilities, new airframe design, a new beyond line-of-sight data-link for re-targeting after launch as well as Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities for enhanced survivability. The US Air Force awarded Lockheed Martin a contract for the development of the JASSM-XR missile in September 2018 with a completion date scheduled for August 2023. The $240 million development contract for the AGM-158D cruise missile was awarded to Lockheed Martin on June 1, 2023. Another $208 million development contract was awarded in March 2025. The new cruise missile development is expected to be completed after 2027. The AGM-158D will be launched from F-35, F-15 and F/A-18E/F fighters as well as from B-2 and B-21 bombers.
