Description

The Grizzly is a 25-ton class highly protected vehicle designed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) to meet the requirements of the Bundeswehr/German Army for peacekeeping missions worldwide. The first order was placed through a contract from BWB defense technology procurement office awarded June 2007. The Grizzly is based on a 6x6 wheeled chassis with its armor and special hull design delivering outstanding protection against improvised explosive devices (IEDs), mines and direct fire to the crew. It fills the capabilities gap between the 10-ton class Dingo 2 protected transport and 30-ton class Boxer armored vehicle. The first vehicle will be delivered to the German Army as early as November 2007. The Grizzly 6x6 armored vehicle features a 5-ton payload and can therefore accommodate up to 10 fully equipped troops while can be airlifted by the A400M tactical transport aircraft. The driver's station and crew compartment form an integral safety cell that provides optimum protection against the effects of IEDs. Moreover, KMW has introduced a series of stiffening elements that protect the crew against injuries in a rollover accident. The vehicle is powered by a 331KW (450-hp) diesel engine which allows for a top speed on road of 90 kph and an operational range of 700 km. Both the engine and transmission are provided with ballistic protection as well. The Grizzly vehicle will be customized as troops transport, ambulance and command post vehicle. Its modular design also makes possible to develop a lighter 4x4 version or a 8x8 version with more payload.
