Description

The European Space Agency (ESA) Space Rider is a next generation automated, unmanned and reusable space transportation system developed as a further development of the IXV concept demonstrator. The Space Rider is expected to be put into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by the new light Vega C launch vehicle while being reusable for up to six missions. The space vehicle can remain in orbit two months and is able to safely reentering the atmosphere and landing. Thales Alenia Space along with ELV were selected as preliminary contractors for the new reusable vehicle in November 2017. The Space Rider development contract was awarded by the ESA to Thales Alenia Space and Avio in December 2020. The first launch of the Space Rider is planned for 2023.
