VBTP-MR

The VBTP-MR (Viatura Blindada Transporte de Pessoal Media de Rodas) is a family of 18t class, 6x6, diesel engine powered armored vehicles with amphibious capability and capable of carrying 11 soldiers. The VBTP-MR can be equipped with a turret armed with remote control weapon station for several different applications. This armored vehicle can be transported by an aircraft of type C-130 Hercules. The VBTP-MR vehicle family is being developed jointly by the Brazilian Army (through the project Mobility Strategy and the DCT - Department of Science and Technology) and Iveco Defence Vehicles with the help of major specialist Brazilian companies. The Brazilian Army selected the Iveco Defence Vehicles in 2007 for the development of a new family of vehicles as the replacement for the aging Urutu vehicle fleet introduced in the 1970s. The first prototype is under construction in Brazil and will be ready in the first half of 2010. Another 16 units of a pilot batch will be produced by Iveco in Brazil between 2010 and 2011. With the first production model expected to roll off the production line and delivered to the Brazilian Army in 2012. The 6 billion Brazilian Reals production contract for 2,044 vehicles was awarded to Iveco on December 18, 2009. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2012 and complete by 2030. In January 2011, the UT30 BR unmanned turret equipped with a 30mm cannon was selected by the Brazilian Army to be installed onboard a few hundreds VBTP-MR 6x6 armored vehicles. The contract valued at $260 million was awarded to Aeroeletronica.
