Talisman

The Talisman is a counter-IED (Improvised Explosive Device) system introduced in 2010 to protect the British Armed Forces deployed in Afghanistan. The system has been designed to provide an increased level of assurance utilizing a combination of armored vehicles, optical cameras and remote-controlled air and ground vehicles. In Afghanistan, the Talisman system operated by the Royal Engineers is in charge of clearing the way of IEDs and mines for convoys taking them to their destination safely. The United Kingdom (UK) Ministry of Defense (MoD) procured the Talisman systems under an urgent operational requirement (UOR) worth more than £180 million. A single Talisman suite of vehicles consists of: a Mastiff 2 protected patrol vehicle called Protected Eyes, a Buffalo mine protected vehicle with a rummaging arm, a HMEE/JCB high mobility engineer excavator, a Talon tracked remotely controlled robot and the Flying Robot, also known as T-Hawk, micro air vehicle equipped with optical cameras. The Flying Robot plays a critical role providing early warning of suspicious objects on the pathway to the Talisman commander.
