Description

The Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) is a joint effort between the United Kingdom, Japan and Italy to develop a next generation aircraft. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, BAE Systems and Leonardo will be contractors responsible for carrying out the new fighter jet program. The aircraft is expected to operate with unmanned aircraft in a network centric warfare system using advanced sensors and cutting-edge weapons. The launch of the GCAP program happened on December 9, 2022, with the development due to start in 2024 and the first flight planned for 2035. The new GCAP should enter service in the 2045-2050 timeframe replacing the UK and Italian Typhoon fighter jets.
