Description

The US Navy's AEGIS is a total weapon system that performs from detection to kill of airborne threats. The heart of the Aegis system is the AN/SPY-1 phased array radar capable of performing search, tracking and missile guidance functions simultaneously with a track capacity of over 100 targets or more. The computer-based command and control (C2) element makes the Aegis capable of simultaneous engagements against airborne, surface and underwater threats. The Aegis MK 82 Mod 0 Guided Missile Director and MK 200 Mod 0 Director Controller are major components of the Aegis Weapons System. Both are assembled by General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products. The Aegis weapon system initial development was completed in 1983. Since then the system has been upgraded continuously under the Baseline approach. After more than 30 years in the active duty the Aegis weapon system is outdated against the latest weapons and electronic systems developed by Russia and China. The US Navy plans for the new Air and Missile Defense Radar (AMDR) to enter service in the early 2020s onboard the DDG 51 Flight III class destroyers along with current Aegis replacement. In March 2005, Raytheon announced that the Aegis weapon system Baseline 7 phase 1 was tested on the USS Momsen (DDG 92) against subsonic and supersonic targets. The Standard Missile-2 Block III, Block IIIA and Block IIIB as well as the ESSM missiles were involved in the testing. During the tests the destroyer Momsen scored several kills successfully and two kills against two separated targets at the same time. The US Navy began testing the new Aegis Baseline 9, which includes air and missile defense capabilities, in 2014. The new Standard SM-2 Block IV and SM-6 missiles provide missile defense capability in the terminal phase along with Aegis Baseline 9. The DDG 113 destroyer commissioned on July 15, 2017, is the firt warship equipped with the Aegis Baseline 9 which allows simultaneous engagement of ballistic and airborne threats.
