IA-63 Pampa
IA-63 Pampa

IA-63 Pampa is a single-engine, twin-seat, subsonic trainer developed in the early 1980s to meet the requirements of the Argentinean Air Force. It was originally developed by Argentina's FMA which was purchased by Lockheed Martin in the mid 1990s becoming Lockheed Martin Aircraft Argentina. Pampa's design was influenced by Alpha Jet ultimately adopting a similar aerodynamic configuration. Powered by a fuel efficient TFE731 turbofan engine Pampa is able to reach a top speed of Mach 0.62+ at high altitude. Besides, the IA-63 is able to perform ground attack missions utilizing free fall bombs and its 30mm DEFA cannon. So far, the Argentinean Air Force is the only known Pampa operator. Starting in 1988 the Argentinean Air Force took delivery of a first lot of 18 Pampas with a second order for 46 aircraft delivered from the late 1990s. Currently, Lockheed Martin Aircraft Argentina is developing a modular low-cost advanced trainer and light attack variant called the AT-63 Pampa for the Argentinean Air Force. Its first flight occurred on June 30, 2005. The AT-63 features digital avionics and upgraded crew station including sophisticated mission computers to support advanced weapon systems. Overall the new upgraded Pampa may reduce maintenance costs using modular approach to systems design.
