Description

The German Navy's Frankenthal-class (MJ 332) ships were designed to serve as minehunters with 12 hulls commissioned between 1992 and 1998. Besides, these ships can perform minelaying missions. These minehunters are based on Type 343 (SM 343) Hameln-class non-magnetizable steel hull. MJ 332-class propulsion system consists of two diesels and two shafts developing 4080 KW of power and allowing a maximum speed of 18 knots. These ships are fitted with a 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun, two Pinguin B3 Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), mine laying equipment, DSQS-11 minehunting sonar, and two launchers for Stinger missiles. In 1999, the Turkish Navy ordered six minehunters equipped with ECA's PAP Mk5 ROVs. The lead ship, Alanya, was commissioned in 2005. As of January 2008, only nine vessels of this class remain in active service with the German Navy.
