Description

The Boxer (formerly known as MRAV/GTK) is a modular, air transportable, multirole and 8x8 and 6x6 vehicle developed to meet the requirements of Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. In the Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) variant can accommodate up to 11 fully equipped soldiers providing high level of armor protection. The Boxer is a multinational program involving Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. In July 2003, the British Ministry of Defense decided to withdraw from the MRAV/Boxer program. The development and production of the Boxer vehicles was carried out by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), Rheinmetall, Alvis and Stork companies. The total number of Boxer armored vehicles to be produced could have been as high as 2,000 if all options were exercised. The first batch of Boxer vehicles originally comprised the delivery of roughly 600 vehicles. The United Kingdom Boxer procurement order could have encompassed up to 1,400 units. The Boxer was originally available on 6x6 and 8x8 wheeled chassis with full ballistic, NBC (Nuclear, Bacteriological and Chemical) and mine protection, add-on armor, and reduced radar and IR signatures for improved survivability. In addition, Boxer also features central tire inflation system (CTIS), all round independent suspension, integrated logistic support, and air conditioning/climate control. The Boxer was to be provided in nine variants: evacuation (6x6), engineer (6x6), radio relay (6x6), artillery observation radar (6x6), repair (8x8), higher echelon command post (8x8), cargo replenishment (8x8), armored mortar (8x8), and weapon carrier vehicle (8x8). So far only the 8x8 variants have been developed and fielded. Finally, the Boxer APC variant entered service in September 2009 with both German and Dutch Armed Forces. The current program scope calls for the production of 600-700 vehicles for Germany, the Netherlands and possibly Saudi Arabia.
