Description

The Thales Lightweight Multi-role Missile (LMM) system is suitable for lightweight maneuverable platforms and for its ability to fire on the move while delivering significant precision effects. The low cost LMM is small in size and builds on the heritage of combat proven munitions such as Starstreak and Starburst. On April 5, 2011, the United Kingdom (UK) Ministry of Defense (MoD) became the launch customer for the LMM weapon with an order for the development and production of 1,000 missiles to be fitted with a laser beam riding guidance system as well as a dual effect shaped charge and blast fragmentation warhead. The multipurpose warhead is detonated by a laser proximity fuze. The UK Armed Forces will receive a future version equipped with a semi-active laser (SAL) seeker replacing the laser beam riding guidance as well as alternative warheads. The LMM modular weapon is intended to engage armored targets stationary or on the move using its precision guidance system at ranges between 400 meters to 6,000-8,000 meters powered by two-stage solid propellant rocket motor. Its multi-mode guidance system also includes GPS/INS navigation along with an Infrared (IR) seeker which is responsible for the terminal guidance. It can be released from ground platforms in the surface-to-surface role or by airborne platforms such as helicopters and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the air-to-surface role. Besides, the weapon will be integrated on the Royal Navy's Lynx Wildcat helicopter as the Future Anti-Surface Guided Weapon Light FASGW(L) missile to engage fast attack boats and small surface ships.
