Description

The Sineva is a third-generation liquid-propellant submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile (SLBM) developed to refit Project 667BDRM, NATO codename Delta IV, Russian ballistic submarines in lieu of R-29RM SLBMs dating from the Cold War Era. The new missile is being provided to submarines after their overhaul beginning in 2007. Each Sineva has a maximum range of 11,000 kilometers and carries four to ten nuclear warheads compared to only 8,300 kilometers on the R-29RM missile. Each of the four warheads delivers 100-kiloton and are fitted with advanced countermeasures to surpass existing and future missile defenses. In the 10-warhead configuration the yield is scaled down several dozens of kilotons. These are new generation nuclear warheads for attacks with pinpoint accuracy. Six upgraded Project 667BDRM submarines armed with Sineva missiles are expected to remain in service with the Russian Navy until at least 2020-2025.
