Description
The LPX is an amphibious assault/landing platform dock ship designed to meet the requirements of South Korea. This ship will be able to transport and disembark Marines and their equipment through helicopters and landing craft. The ship features a spacious flight deck which eventually could be able to operate V/STOL aircraft (Harrier or F-35C). It is likely that the LPX is intended as a Korean international peacekeeping operations contribution rather than a threat against North Korea. The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) plans to build two LPX vessels with the first one to be commissioned in June 2007. The second LPX would be commissioned by 2019.
