Husky

The Husky is a route mine clearance vehicle manufactured by Rolling Stock Division (RSD), a subsidiary of DCD-Dorbyl, in South Africa. The Husky is primary mover for the Chubby mine clearance system which also comprises the Meerkat mine detection vehicle, which sweeps out in front of the other modules, and Duisendpoot mine detonation trailer which is, typically, towed by the Husky and consists of three trailers in tandem. The Duisendpoot has enough mass to detonate pressure sensitive mines while covering three meters in wide. The mine detection system is intended to counter anti-vehicle and anti-tank mines and improvised explosive devices. The pulse induction type metal mine detectors are fitted to both Husky and Meerkat vehicles. The Duisendpoot trailer explodes the mines which have not been detected by the Chubby mine detection systems. In a single day, the Chubby system can clear a pathway of 200 km long and 3 meters wide. The Husky mine clearance system was developed for the South African Army in the 1980s to clear military convoy routes of anti-vehicle mines in Namibia and Angola. The South African Army was the first operator to deploy the system. The Husky has been ordered by the United States Army and Marine Corps with more than 600 systems so far as part of the global war on terror (GWOT) effort. Other coalition countries involved in the GWOT also ordered the mine clearance system. Due to operational feedback during the GWOT conflict, RSD has developed the Husky 2G which features more sophisticated sensor and devices and a two operators cabin to handle all the extra workload.
