Description
The Indian Navy follow-on Talwar frigates or Talwar 2/Triput is a program resulting of the Russian Navy cancellation of the construction of three Project 11356M frigates due to the propulsion system's gas turbine supplied by Ukraine. The initial agreement between Russia and India was signed in October 2016. Two vessels previously being built by Yantar shipyard for the Russian Navy would be transferred to the Indian Navy. Two new ships will be built by Goa Shipyards in India for its Navy with the powerplants being supplied by Ukraine. All in, the Indian Navy will commission four Talwar 2 stealth frigates beginning in 2019 or 2020 with more ships (2-4) expected to follow under a $4 billion deal.
