Description

The Challenger 3 is an upgraded variant intended as replacement for the Challenger 2 main battle tank within the British Army. The Challenger 3 is expected to feature improved sensor and armor as well as a new smooth bore 120mm main gun from Rheinmetall. The British Army plans for the upgrade of 150 Challenger 2 tanks to the Challenger 3 standard by the mid 2020s. In May 2021 BAE Systems and Rheinmetall Defence were awarded a £800 million contract for the upgrade of 148 Challenger 2 tanks to the Challenger 3 standard. The Challenger 3 is expected to remain in service until 2040.
