Description

The Yu-71, also known as Project 4202, is an hypersonic glider weapon designed to fly at speeds above Mach 10 (11,200 kph) carrying a nuclear warhead while retaining extreme maneuverability and the ability to fly following an unpredictable trajectory. The hypersonic glider is released by an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and is intended to pierce any present and future missile defense. The Yu-71 existence was reported as of late June 2015 along with at least four tests associated with the new glider. The Russian military required several years to develop the new hypersonic weapon with the last test launch carried out on February 16, 2015, by an SS-19 ICBM. The first test launch was carried out most likely in 2013 or 2014. The Sarmat is the carrier with the responsibility to deliver up to 16 Yu-71 gliders into space. The gliders are espected to fly at an speed between Mach 7 and Mach 15.
