Description

The AN/FPS-117 “Seek Igloo” (RRP-117 in Germany) is an L-band (IEEE) or D-band (NATO) solid-state air defense radar manufactured by Lockheed Martin in the United States. Operating between 1215 and 1400 MHz, it provides real-time 3D target information over an instrumented range of up to 463 km, correlated with secondary radar replies. It employs a phased array antenna that rotates at 5 rpm (6 rpm in Germany), with an electronically steered beam in elevation, and utilizes pulse compression to achieve better range resolution despite relatively long pulsewidths (100 or 800 µs). The radar features a peak power of 20 kW and can operate in a “short range mode” with a shorter pulse for improved close-range detection, though this reduces maximum range due to a weaker energy balance. The AN/TPS-77 (formerly AN/TPS-117) and AN/TPS-59 are mobile variants within Lockheed Martin’s “117” radar family.
