Description

The AN/MPN-14 is a mobile air traffic control radar system designed to direct and land aircraft. It functions as a complete landing control center, comprising a RAPCON (Radar Approach Control) trailer, an operations trailer, and a power trailer. The RAPCON trailer serves as a centralized operating area, enabling control of aircraft within an instrumented range of 60 nautical miles (approximately 110 km). This system, which operates at frequencies between 2780 and 2820 MHz with a peak power of 600 kW, augments Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) radar sets to manage air traffic approaching or departing an airfield. The AN/MPN-14 system includes an equipment trailer housing radar electronics, a maintenance trailer with a workbench and UHF/VHF radios, and the RAPCON trailer containing ASR (Airport Surveillance Radar) and PAR (Precision Approach Radar) displays and controls. The mobile RAPCON trailer can be positioned up to 500 feet from the maintenance trailer. The AN/MPN-13 is a similar system but lacks the additional mobile RAPCON component.
