AORL-85
The AORL-85 “Ekran” (Aerodromnyy Obzornyy RadioLokator) is an L-band airport surveillance radar manufactured by Chelyabinsk Radio Plant „Polet”. Operating within a frequency range of 1216 to 1278 MHz, it is designed for detecting aircraft, determining their coordinates (azimuth and distance), and managing air traffic on airfields. The radar employs a 7.5 × 4 meter double-curved parabolic reflector antenna, fed by two horn radiators to form distinct lower and upper beams, and transmits an intrapulse-modulated signal with linear frequency modulation, selectable across 8 frequencies. With a peak power of 35 kW, an average power of 450 W, and a pulse width of 24 µs, it achieves an instrumented range of 110 km (60 NM) with a range resolution and accuracy of 250 m, a beamwidth of 2.1°, and an antenna rotation speed of 9 to 11 rpm. The AORL-85 is equipped with two secondary radars for national and international modes, utilizing an additional omnidirectional antenna for sidelobe suppression, and boasts a mean time between critical failures (MTBCF) of 1,000 hours and a mean time to repair (MTTR) of 60 minutes. Modernized versions incorporate components from its successor, the AORL-1.
