Description

The Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) is a US Army program aimed at delivering a Mach 5 ground-launched attack missile. The new missile can be launched from a modified version of the M870 8x8 semi-trailer missile launcher utilized by the Patriot missile system. Each carrier vehicle can fire up to two missiles with a maximum range in excess of 500 kilometers. The LRHW is a ballistic missile that will boost the Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB) warhead to Mach 5 speeds. The first prototype of the LRHW weapon system is expected to be delivered to the US Army by 2023. A single LRHW battery will consists of a mobile operations center and four launcher vehicles with eight missiles in total. The existence of the new weapon system was revealed in August 2019 and is currently being developed by the Sandia National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy (DoE) and the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
