Description

The Roussen is a class of seven fast attack crafts designed by BAE Systems and built by the Elefsis Shipyards in Greece for the Hellenic Navy. Within the Hellenic Navy employs they serve as a high speed interception and offshore patrol craft. These boats are well fitted to conduct anti-surface warfare (ASuW) in the littoral environment with a limited anti-aircraft and anti-missile capabilities for point air defense only. The lead ship was commissioned by the Hellenic Navy in December 2005 with another two boats commissioned in 2006. The first of a second batch of four vessels was commissioned in October 2010. The Roussen-class is to replacement for the nine Combatant III and IIIb patrol boats commissioned between 1977 and 1981. The Roussen-class ships are powered by four MTU 16V 595 TE 90 diesel engines in COmbined Diesel And Diesel (CODAD) arrangement developing a top speed of roughly 35 knots. The weapon system of these high speed, multi-role platforms consists of eight MM40 Exocet Block 2 anti-ship missiles, one 76/62 Rapid Fire gun system mounted at the bow to engage airborne and surface targets, two OTOBREDA 30mm guns for anti-aircraft purposes, and a Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) system with 21 rounds mounted at the stern. All in, the Roussen compact hull delivers an economic solution to surveillance, intelligence gathering, patrol, interdiction and engagement of enemy forces.
