Artisan 3D
The Artisan 3D (Advanced Radar Target Indication Situational Awareness and Navigation), also designated Type 997 by the Royal Navy, is a medium-range E/F-band naval radar developed by BAE Systems in the United Kingdom. It provides 3D air and surface surveillance, replacing the Type 996 radar on Royal Navy Type 23 frigates. With an instrumented range exceeding 200 km and a blind range of less than 200 m, it can detect over 800 targets simultaneously, including small, fast objects like birds traveling at Mach 3, small aircraft, and fast inshore attack craft, even in high-clutter littoral environments or with up to 10,000 conflicting signals. The system features a compact, lightweight design (approximately 700 kg), a narrow beamwidth of less than 2.5 degrees, an antenna rotation speed of 30 rpm, and a software-centric architecture for cost-effective upgrades, boasting a Mean Time Between Critical Failures (MTBCF) of over 4,500 hours and a Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) of less than 0.5 hours. Its accuracy and anti-jamming capabilities have led to proposals for retrofitting it onto the Royal Navy's Type 26 frigates.
