DURO III Swiss 4x4 All-Terrain Tactical Vehicle
DURO III

The DURO III Swiss 4x4 All-Terrain Tactical Vehicle is a high-mobility, off-road tactical transport vehicle manufactured by General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) (formerly MOWAG). Its name is an acronym for DUrable and RObust. Designed as a modular platform, the DURO III 4x4 serves primarily as a logistics and utility workhorse for military forces operating in difficult terrain. It distinguishes itself from standard military trucks through its unique De Dion axle suspension and patented roll stabilizer system, which provide exceptional cross-country mobility and chassis torsion comparable to tracked vehicles. The defining feature of the DURO series is its chassis technology, which prioritizes payload stability and traction in extreme environments. De Dion Axles: Unlike solid beam axles, the De Dion tube design separates the differential from the axle, reducing unspring weight and increasing ground clearance. Patented Roll Stabilizer: A unique suspension linkage allows the axles to twist significantly off-road (high articulation) while automatically stiffening to prevent body roll during on-road cornering. This allows the vehicle to maintain high speeds on paved roads without the "wallow" typical of off-road trucks. Chassis: The DURO III features a rigid ladder-frame chassis that serves as the base for the MOWAG Eagle IV and Eagle V armored vehicles, indicating a high degree of structural commonality. The rear chassis can accept interchangeable modules, allowing a single vehicle to convert between roles such as Troop Carrier (up to 14 personnel), Ambulance, Command Post, or Logistics/Cargo carrier. The DURO III 4x4 fits a specific niche between a light utility vehicle (like a Humvee) and a heavy tactical truck (like a Unimog). Its compact width (2.16m) allows it to navigate narrow trails and urban centers inaccessible to larger trucks, while its advanced suspension allows it to transport sensitive electronic equipment or injured personnel over rough terrain with minimal vibration and shock.
