S-550

The Russian Armed Forces S-550 is a new ground-based air defense system being developed at moment with the main specifications being unknown. Its existence was revealed in November 2021. The S-550 seems to be a further development of the S-500 missile system optimized for interception of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) warheads as well as any other kind of ballistic missile with lower range. The same missile system should have some capabilities in order to engage hypersonic missiles and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The S-550 is expected to be fielded within the Russian Armed Forces in the 2027-2030 timeframe. It has been reported that the S-550 weapon system will be mobile, use a hypersonic missile and had already being tested in November 2021. The system could be fielded by the Russian Armed Force as soon as 2025. Russia officially confirmed that the S-550 is an evolution of the S-500 and its primary goal is the X-37 spaceship as well as US-made hypersonic weapons. The kill altitude of the S-550 missile system is limited to 250 kilometers because the system requires support from additional radar stations in order to engage a space target with maximum probability of success. The system was first fielded within the Russian Armed Forces in late December 2021. The Russian Army original goal was to deploy 10 S-500 systems but due to the Ukraine war escalation that number may have increased to 20-60 with the aim of replacing the legacy S-300 missile systems within a decade (2030-2035). The S-500 seems to refer an air defense variant intended to counter airborne threats while the S-550 is the system optimized to counter ICBMs. The possibility of a war with NATO and the United States signals the possibility of the S-550 strategic missile defense system being deployed in large numbers enough to cover critical areas of the Russian territory.
