Scanter 5502/5602
The Scanter 5502/5602 is an X-band (9.0-9.5 GHz), solid-state, 2D, fully coherent pulse compression radar featuring software-defined functionality. Primarily employed as an Airport Surface Movement Radar within an Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) network, it offers two transmitter versions: the Scanter 5502 with a 50 W solid-state power amplifier, suitable for waveguide lengths up to 15 m, and the Scanter 5602 with a 200 W transmitter, recommended for waveguide lengths up to 45 m. The radar's transmitted pulse power, with a peak power range of 0-20 kW, is programmable, including sector-specific adjustments, and it utilizes a 21-foot circularly polarized linear array antenna rotating at 60 rpm, providing an instrumented range of 5 nautical miles (approximately 9 km) with 3 m accuracy. Additionally, the Scanter 5502 is adapted for radar-based Obstruction Light Control (OLC) in wind farms, activating obstruction lights only when an aircraft is detected nearby, thereby reducing light pollution by avoiding 95-98% of continuous operation, though lights remain active at twilight and require German Air Traffic Control test flights for approval.
