Description

The Glide Breaker is project being sponsored by the United States DARPA to develop a hard kill hypersonic interceptor capable of taking down hypersonic cruise missiles such as Kinzhal and Avangard which are able to fly at Mach 10 and Mach 20 respectively. The program is a high risk initiative and may end in failure due to challenge of developing a hypersonic interceptor that effectively can engage a hypersonic target. The existence of the Glide Breaker was revealed in September 2018 with the first meeting revealing the requirements were carried out in July 2018. The new missile may enter service in the late 2020s or in the 2030s.
