Aermacchi MB-339 is a single-engine, subsonic, two-seat trainer jet derived from MB-326 trainer. The Italian Air Force purchased MB-339 to replace its fleet of MB-326 aircraft beginning in the late 1970s. Many international customers also purchased this aircraft. MB-339 is powered by a Rolls Royce Viper turbojet rated between 4,000 to 4,400 pounds of thrust. Despite advanced training for fighter aircraft crews is MB-339's primary role can assume light attack role armed with bombs and missiles. Several variants were developed featuring different avionics and Viper engine models. Currently, the Italian Air Force plans focus on the M-346 advanced trainer as the replacement for the MB-339 aircraft. In July 2006, Alenia Aermacchi and the Nigerian Ministry of Defense signed a maintenance and avionics upgrade contract on behalf of 12 MB-339A aircraft. The contract was valued at $84 million and will see the Nigerian airplanes upgraded in two six-aircraft batches.
