Description

The Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ship or PPA is a highly flexible ship capable of meeting a wide range of missions profiles ranging from patrol, sea rescue to surface fighting vessel. Its modular architecture allows to configure these ships for patrol and fighting missions combining an array of sensors and weapon systems. The PPA is capable of operating high-speed vessels such as RIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) up to 11 meters long through lateral cranes or a hauling ramp located at the far stern. The propulsion system is based upon a combined diesel and gas (CODAG) turbines arrangement. These ships can supply water and electric power (up to 2,000 kW) to land. Besides, they can embark residential and healthcare modules allowing for transportation of civilians and wounded personnel. The Italian Navy expects to take delivery of the first PPA vessel in 2021 following a procurement contract signed with Fincantieri and Finmeccanica in May 2015. A total of six vessels are planned for delivery by 2025 with four additional PPAs as option. In November 2015 Italy exercised an option for a seventh PPA vessel. The PPA is provided with a high level of innovation to achieve a considerable degree of efficiency and flexibility allowing to serve both military and civil purposes. In addition, the ship has a low environmental impact thanks an electric auxiliary propulsion system generating a low level of pollution and biological waster control system. The PPA's combat system will be provided by Selex ES (a Finmeccanica subsidiary) including the new multi-functional radar. OTO Melara, WASS, MBDA and Elettronica will take care of supplying sensors and weapon systems. Fincantieri and Selex ES will develop the ship's bridge allowing for the integrated management of sailing and combat operations, using augmented reality to allow both functions to be effectively managed with fewer operators. Indonesia ordered two PPA vessels in March 2024 under a 1.18 billion Euro contract.
