Description

The Laser-Guided Sidewinder (LaGS) is an air-to-surface version developed by Diehl BGT Defence on the basis of the AIM-9L Sidewinder air-to-air missile intended to hit small, light armored, mobile targets on the ground. The LaGS utilizes a small warhead with maximum target precision to minimize collateral damage in the Close Air Support (CAS) and Urban Close Air Support (UCAS). The AIM-9L's infrared seeker has been replaced by a semi-active laser (SAL) on the LaGS missile. The new air-to-surface missile is fully compatible with existing Sidewinder air-to-air missile stations and interfaces. The life cycle of the new weapon is 20 years. This low cost modification program of the AIM-9L missile was unveiled in September 2012.
