Description

The Molniya, Lightning in English, is a multipurpose jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) by Kronstadt to meet the requirements of the Russian Armed Forces. The capabilities of the Molniya are unknown but it could serve as a reconnaissance and strike drone along the Grom supersonic drone also being developed by Kronstadt. More details have emerged and the Molniya is expected to be launched from aircraft such as the Su-57 stealth fighter. A single Su-57 is able to carry up to eight such drones inside its internal weapons bays. The Molniya drones might execute electronic warfare (EW) and suicide strike missions operating in swarms with the final goal of breaking through sophisticated air defenses. The drone has a maximum range of five-to-seven kilometers and carries a warhead of five-to-seven kilograms. The Molniya existence was revealed in February 2021.
