Description
The 3M51 Alfa is a submarine launched cruise missile (SLCM) designed to engage surface ships and targets on-shore. The 3M51 uses a layout similar to the 3M54 Club missile system with a highly subsonic first stage that runs for several hundreds kilometers and a terminal highly supersonic stage carrying the warhead. The supersonic stage is intended to penetrate advanced air defenses and runs for 30 to 50 kilometers. The Alfa missile can be equipped with a nuclear warhead and its range could vary between 300 to 800 kilometers. The Russian Navy's Project 885 Yasen nuclear attack submarines are the primary carriers for the 3M51 Alfa cruise missiles.
