Description

The Dong Feng 31A, also known as DF-31A and CSS-10 East Wind Mod 2 in the West, is an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) designed to carry up to three Multiple Independently targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRVs) armed with a single nuclear warhead each. It is a solid-fueled, three stages silo-based ballistic missile with a maximum range of 11,200 km. There are no official plans released about the pace and total procurement for the DF-31 ballistic missile, but about 100-200 DF-31s fielded by 2020 seems to be likely. DF-31s and future DF-41s should be the basis of land-based Chinese nuclear strategic forces in the 21st century. The DF-31A long range makes possible to hit any target located in Asia and the European territory. The DF-31A is fully capable of reaching any target in the Continental United States of America (CONUS). The missile is a MIRVed (multiple warheads) missile version to counter Western Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) defenses.
