Description

The Type 73 Chinese Anti-Personnel Grenade is a high-explosive (HE), anti-personnel (AP), defensive, fragmentation, hand grenade that contains an impact, all-ways-acting, cocked-striker fuze.

Design The grenade body consists of outer and inner two-piece bodies, the explosive charge and the fuze well insert with the detonator. The outer grenade body consists of a hemispherical lower end and a cylindrical upper end that has a rounded top with a fuze well opening. The two sections are joined together by a roll crimp. The inner body, which is a fragmentation sleeve, is believed to be constructed in two pieces and conforms to the shape of the outer body.
Charge The explosive charge is housed in the inner body and has a large detonator well that accepts the detonator. It contains approximately 580, 3-millimetre steel balls in a matrix.
Note The grenade is used against personnel, materiel and moving targets and it can function as a booby-trap.
