Description

The AK-103 Russian 7.62mm Assault Rifle is a gas-operated design by Mikhail Kalashnikov, part of the AK-100 series, and was officially offered for export on March 13, 1993. It represents a modernization of the AK platform specifically designed to chamber the older 7.62x39mm M43 cartridge while incorporating the technological improvements of the AK-74M. The AK-103 emerged from a practical manufacturing philosophy developed in the 1990s. The AK-100 series was designed to maximize the use of interchangeable parts across multiple caliber variants on a single assembly line. This approach allowed Kalashnikov Concern to produce rifles in 5.45x39mm (AK-74M, AK-105), 5.56x45mm NATO (AK-101, AK-102), and 7.62x39mm (AK-103, AK-104) with minimal tooling changes. The design team, working with Mikhail Kalashnikov himself, standardized components across all variants. All AK-100 series rifles use the same 5.5mm trunnion, folding stock, receiver, handguards, bolt carrier, and fire control group—only the barrel, bolt, and rear sight base differ between caliber variants.
