Description

The S-300PMU2 Favorit - SA-20 Gargoyle in NATO parlance - is a long range, Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system designed to engage aircraft, cruise missiles and theater ballistic missiles in intense clutter and jamming environments. It can engage up to 6 targets simultaneously while providing guidance for up to 12 missiles - two missiles per target ensuring target kill. In addition, a highly automated detection and acquisition procedures provides outstanding performance over previous SAM systems. The S-300PMU2 is an upgraded version of S-300PMU1 SAM system offering better performance against aerodynamic and ballistic targets. The S-300PMU2 SAM system comprises a 30N6E1 illumination and guidance radar mounted on an all-terrain vehicle, up to 12 5P85ME (5P85SE) launcher vehicles each carrying four 48N6E2 or the S-300PMU1's 48N6E missiles, a 54K6E command and control (C2) post and other associated vehicles and equipment for reloading, maintenance and repair. The 64N6E2 detection radar system, with a maximum detection range of 300 kilometers, can be integrated into the S-300 SAM system providing improved target acquisition capability. The new 48N6E2 missile has been designed for optimized engagement of ballistic and aerodynamic targets at longer ranges. The 5P85ME launchers act as a Transporter, Erector and Launcher (TEL) vehicle. The cluster with four sealed 48N6E or 48N6E2 missiles must be set vertically in order to launch them. The Vertical Launch System (VLS) ensures 360-degree coverage of the battle space overcoming the shortfalls related to the ramp-launched SAM systems. The S-300PMU2 SAM system was introduced in 1996 and is available as an upgrade for existing S-300PMU1 air defense systems. The 83M6E and 83M6E2 combat management centers are intended to link up to six S-300PMU2 (also PMU1) systems into a single air defense system providing a six-fold combined engagement capability. Using the combat management post six PMU2s can engage up to 36 targets simultaneously while providing guidance for up to 72 missiles - two missiles per target ensuring kill. The S-300PMU2 Favorit equipped with 48N6E2 surface-to-air missiles can engage airborne targets at ranges between 3 to 200 kilometers, at altitudes between 10 to 27,000 meters, and airspeeds of up to 2,800 meters per second (Mach 9). In its anti-ballistic missile (ABM) role, this air defense system can engage theater ballistic missiles at ranges between 5 to 40 kilometers and altitudes between 2,000 to 25,000 meters. Its high mobility is supported by a variety of vehicles designed to achieve a top speed of 60 kph on-road and 40 kph off-road.
