Description

The ZBL-19 (Type 19) Chinese Amphibious Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) is China’s third-generation wheeled armored fighting vehicle, designed to replace or supplement the widely used Type 08 (ZBL-08) family in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Medium Combined Arms Brigades. First observed in testing around 2019–2020 and confirmed in operational service with the Western Theater Command (76th Group Army) by late 2024/early 2025, the Type 19 represents a significant leap in lethality and survivability, featuring an unmanned turret, top-attack anti-tank missiles, and enhanced modular armor. The deployment of the Type 19 to the 76th Group Army (Western Theater Command) highlights China's focus on high-altitude and rapid-reaction warfare. The 76th GA operates in the rugged terrain bordering India and Central Asia, where the high mobility of wheeled 8x8 platforms is preferred over heavier tracked armor. The shift to "fire-and-forget" missiles significantly increases the independent combat power of these units, allowing them to threaten enemy tanks without exposing themselves for the duration of the missile's flight.

Variants
ZTL-19 Replaces the ZTL-11. It features a 105mm rifled gun in a rear-mounted manned turret. Key ID Feature: The gun lacks a muzzle brake (unlike the ZTL-11), utilizing an advanced recoil system to reduce signature and crew blast overpressure. Role: Provides direct fire support and anti-tank capability for the wheeled brigade.

Main Weapon System
Turret The most distinct feature of the Type 19 is its unmanned turret, which separates the crew from the ammunition and weapon mechanisms.
30mm Autocannon The primary armament is a stabilized 30mm autocannon, capable of firing armor-piercing (APDS) and high-explosive incendiary (HEI) rounds. It is optimized for engaging light armor, infantry, and low-flying helicopters.
Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM)
Next-Gen ATGMs (HJ-16 / QN-502C) Unlike the Type 08, which relied on the older, wire-guided HJ-73D (Sagger derivative), the Type 19 carries four box-launched anti-tank guided missiles in a retractable or armored side housing. Capability: These missiles are reported to use infrared imaging (IIR) guidance, offering "fire-and-forget" capability. Top-Attack: Crucially, they possess a top-attack mode to defeat modern main battle tanks (MBTs) by striking their thinner roof armor, a capability previously lacking in PLA medium brigades.
Fire Control System
Note The vehicle is equipped with a hunter-killer fire control system, featuring independent panoramic sights for the commander and high-definition thermal imagers for the gunner.
Protection
Armor The hull features bolt-on modular composite armor blocks. Base protection is estimated to withstand 14.5mm AP rounds over the frontal arc, with the potential to resist 25mm/30mm rounds when up-armored.
Applique Armor Available
Active Protection The turret is designed with mounting points for laser warning receivers and potentially a hard-kill Active Protection System (APS) in future blocks, though standard variants currently feature soft-kill smoke dischargers.
Mine Resistance The hull floor has been reinforced to better withstand IEDs and mines, a lesson learned from global conflicts involving wheeled armor.
