Description

The Indian Navy Varunastra is a domestically designed and built torpedo intended to engage quite and stealthy submarines both in deep and swallow waters in intense countermeasures environment. This heavyweight torpedo was developed by the DRDO's Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) to be launched from surface ships against submerged submarines. It is powered by an electric motor reaching a top speed of 40 nautical miles per hour while carrying a 250 kg warhead. The Varunastra torpedo was introduced in June 2016 with the Indian Navy ordering 73 such weapons.
