Description

The AN/SPY-1 is an F-band (3,100 to 3,500 MHz) electronically scanned fixed-array naval radar, serving as the core of the US Navy’s Aegis fleet air defense system. Operating with a peak power of 4 to 6 MW and an average power of 58 kW, its four fixed, phase-scanned arrays continuously provide simultaneous search and tracking capabilities for hundreds of targets within an instrumented range of 320 km. Each 3.65 x 3.65 meter array contains 4,100 discrete elements, controlled by AN/UYK-7 digital computers to generate and steer multiple radar beams for target detection, tracking, and midcourse guidance for the ship's own Standard Missile (SM-2) engagements. Fully operational since 1983, the system has seen the development of advanced versions and variants with different antenna sizes.
