Description

The Nag, Cobra in English, is a third generation medium-range, fire-and-forget, top-attack anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) developed to meet the requirements of the Indian Armed Forces replacing Milan 2 and Konkurs anti-tank missile systems. The missile features a guidance system based on a CCD-TV/IR passive seeker and a tandem HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) warhead designed to penetrate armored vehicles by explosive reactive armor (ERA) and/or modular reinforced steel armor. Bharat Dynamics Limited is the manufacturer of the Nag anti-tank missile which can be launched from ground vehicles or rotary-wing aircraft. A Nag missile round weighs 42 kg which means it is not suitable for use by dismounted infantrymen. The Indian Army (500) and Air Force (100) have a combined requirement for a minimum of 600 missiles. The program was slated for completion December 2008 but it was delayed due to poor performance of the missile system. In August 2010 the Indian Ministry of Defense reported that the Nag missile was validated through a series of live firings and customer feedbacks and the program was ready to enter production. The missile range may have been cut to 4,000 meters from the 6,000 meters reported initially.
