Description

The AN/SPS-49 is the U.S. Navy's primary long-range two-dimensional air search radar, operating within a frequency range of 850 to 942 MHz. It has been deployed on numerous combatants, including aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and amphibious ships, with up to 200 systems operational simultaneously. Originally designed for general air surveillance against aircraft, its high average power of 12 kW, clutter rejection, anti-jamming capabilities, and automatic detection features also enable significant detection performance against both high-altitude and sea-skimming missiles. The Naval Research Laboratory's Radar Division has been integral to the AN/SPS-49 program, contributing to specification development, design reviews, factory acceptance testing, and performance evaluations, including the development of single-scan radial velocity estimation for faster target tracking and improved maneuver detection in the SPS-49A(V)1 variant.
