RG-31

The BAE Systems Land Systems South Africa RG-31 Nyala is a 4x4 mine-protected, all-terrain armored personnel carrier capable of carrying nine passengers in addition to the driver. Besides, it can transport a 3,500 kg payload and has maximum combat mass of 17,000 kg. Its all-steel, welded armor, monocoque hull has been designed specifically to withstand ballistic impacts from small arms fire and anti-tank mine detonations. Its standard equipment includes air-conditioned. Additional equipment can be provided to meet a wide range of mission requirements including weapon stations such as Protector (US Army and US Marine Corps) and RCWS. RG-31 can assume a wide spectrum of roles such as APC (Armored Personnel Carrier), command vehicle, ambulance and surveillance vehicle. It has been widely used during peacekeeping missions all over the world. Alvis, now BAE Land Systems OMC, introduced the RG-31 mine protected vehicle with high on- and off-road mobility in the mid-1990s. More than 2,200 vehicles have been ordered so far from at least 14 customers worldwide. The United States Army and Marine Corps have become the largest operators of RG31 vehicles under the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) program launched in support of the Global War in Terror and the military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. Production for the United States military is being carried out in partnership between BAE Systems and General Dynamics in locations in Canada and South Africa. In addition to the United States, Canada and Spain also purchased the RG-31 to support their NATO commitments in Afghanistan. The RG-31 Mk5 remains the standard production model as of August 2008. In September 2008 Land Systems OMC launched the Mk6E variant featuring anti-mine seats.
