Description

The Cheonryong is a surface-skimming land attack cruise missile intended to be launched from the Republic of Korea Navy's (RoKN) surface ships and submarines. It is derived from the Hyunmu-3A cruise missile deployed by the Republic of Korea Army (RoKA). The Cheonryong precision strike missile can hit targets at ranges of 500 kilometers carrying a 450-500 kg conventional warhead. The guidance system combines the inertial navigation system (INS) with terrain counter matching system. In February 2011, the Korean media reported that its Navy intended to equip some of its Aegis destroyers (KDX-II and KDX-III) with the Cheonryong cruise missile to hit targets in North Korea by the year's end. Other source also suggest that the Cheonryong missile is being installed on the Type 214 conventional attack submarines. The RoKN will utilize the cruise missile to take out coastal defense and missile battery sites in North Korea.
