Description
The Kalina is a Russian stationary position, high energy laser system designed to blind optical reconnaissance satellites flying over Russian territory. The laser itself is being developed by Rosatom nuclear energy research and production complex. The laser has been designed to blind permanently electro-optical (EO) sensors; this approach is safer than the destruction of the spacecraft itself that might result in thousands of space debris. The Kalina existence was revealed in July 2022 and the laser system was under development at that moment. Its construction in the Northern Caucasus started in 2011 and is expected to be operational before 2025.
