Description

The K21 is a 25-ton class, medium armored, high mobility, amphibious, tracked infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) designed and manufactured by Doosan DST to meet the requirements of the Republic of Korea Army (RoKA) in the 21st century. Its development started in 1999 and the first serial production vehicles were handed over to the RoKA in November/December 2009. Compared to existing RoKA armored personnel carriers such as the K200A1, the K21 offers enhanced armor protection, increased firepower, mobility and the ability to coordinate with main battle tanks (MBTs) using digital communications and combat management systems commonly referred to network-centric warfare capability. Doosan SDT was awarded two contracts in 2008 and 2009 worth more than $1 billion for continued mass production until 2012. The K-21 armored vehicle features a two-am turret equipped with a 40mm automatic cannon with a rate of fire of 300 rounds per minute, a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and third generation anti-tank guided missile system. The weapon system is intended to engage surface targets such as infantrymen and armored vehicles as well as aircraft flying at low altitudes and low speeds. The diesel powerplant developing 750-hp allows a top speed on road of 70 kilometers per hour (kph) or 40-kph cross country. The vehicle is equipped with lateral floats for amphibious operations needing just 15 minutes to setting them up. The K21 carries a crew of three men (driver, gunner and commander) with a squad of nine fully-equipped infantrymen in the troops compartment. Overall, Doosan DST claims that the K-21 is superior to the United States M2A3 Bradley and Russian BMP-3 tracked armored vehicles.
