The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) P-1 is a maritime patrol aircraft developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) as the replacement for the P-3C Orion. The P-1 aircraft purpose is to conduct long-range surveillance flights across the waters surrounding Japan. It is powered by four F7-IHI-10 turbofan engines each developing 5,400 kg of thrust and allowing a top speed of 450 knots. With a maximum take-off weight of 80,000 kg the P-1 is operated by a crew of 11-man plus two pilots. The sensor package includes a Toshiba HPS-106 360-degree active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar to detect surface targets, a tail-mounted magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) and deployable sonobouys to detect submerged submarines. The weapon options include mines, torpedoes, depth charges, bombs and Harpoon anti-ship missiles carried inside the internal weapons bay or attached to eight external hard points. The P-1 aircraft entered service with the JMSDF in 2013 with 60 airplanes expected to be produced until 2020-2025.
