The Type 99 howitzer replaced the Type 75 howitzer. The Japanese Defense Agency Technical Research Division designed the howitzer. Like the Type 75, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan (hull and final assembly) and Japan Steel Works (howitzer and turret) built the howitzer. The Type 99 is also known as "Long Nose" It is fitted with a travel lock that is located on the front of the vehicle. The travel lock folds onto the front glacis plate when not in use. The howitzer is also equipped with an auto loader that enables the howitzer to fire a maximum rate of 18 rounds in 3 minutes.. Secondary armament consists of a roof-mounted 12.7 mm heavy machine gun. Armor of the Type 99 provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Vehicle is fitted with NBC protection system. It is possible the vehicle is equipped with a muzzle velocity radar (located on the rear of the turret) to feed data into the fire control system.
