The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Second Artillery Force tested a new short-range ballistic missile in January 2014, referred here as the Chinese Short Range Ballistic Missile 2014. The new tactical ballistic missile system is deployed on a 12x12 heavy truck system which also acts as Tractor-Erector-Launcher (TEL) platform. According to the Chinese internet the new weapon is the first ever Chinese independent designed and produced short-range missile. So far the new weapon system has achieved 11 successes out of 11 test launches. The new ballistic missiles may be referred to as DF-16 by China or CSS-11 by the West. It features a maximum range of 800 to 1,000 kilometers. As of early 2017, the two-stage DF-16 is a new design with a maximum range of 1,600 kilometers carrying a 1,000-1,500 kg warhead and intended to breach US missile defenses such as Patriot and THAAD systems. The production DF-16 medium range ballistic missile (MRBM) is deployed by a 10x10 vehicle and is the successor of DF-15 and the replacement for DF-11. The missile's circular error probable (CEP) is 5 meters and was first showcased in 2015.
