Description

The N001 (RLPK-27, short for RadioLokatsionnyy Pritsel’nyy Kompleks for Su-27), codenamed “Mech” (meaning “Sword”), is an X-band (IEEE designation) or I-band (NATO designation) pulse-Doppler fire control radar. Manufactured by Phazotron Scientific and Production Company, it features solid-state technology and digital signal processing, operating with a peak power of 10 kW and an average power of 1 kW, providing an instrumented range of 140 km (75 NM). Integrated into Su-27, Su-30MKK (N001VE), and Su-30MK2 (N001VEP) fighters, the initial version used a mechanically steered planar phased-array antenna with a twisted Cassegrain design, enabling electronic vertical beam steering and single-target engagement. Upgraded versions exist, with the N001VEP+ “Pero” (meaning “feather”), also known as “Panda,” being the latest modernization. This variant replaces the Cassegrain design with a lightweight reflective passive phased array antenna, extending the detection range to 190 km against fighter aircraft, offering basic terrain-following capabilities, and allowing simultaneous engagement of up to six air targets or four ground targets. The system has a mean time between critical failures (MTBCF) of 100 hours.
